Abstract
Sony and Kadokawa’s strategic alliance marks a pivotal moment in Japan’s evolving entertainment landscape, where intellectual property (IP) has become a key driver of value creation across games, film, music, and digital media. This case study explores the motivations behind Sony’s decision to pursue a strategic capital and business alliance with Kadokawa instead of a full acquisition, providing a lens into how major players leverage partnerships to enhance their creative ecosystems.
Set in late 2024, the study follows Kei Lee, a business student, as he investigates why Sony, known for its hardware and global entertainment platforms, targeted Kadokawa, a content-rich powerhouse renowned for its manga, anime, and gaming IPs. By analyzing both companies’ core strengths, past collaborations, and strategic alignments—particularly in gaming (e.g., FromSoftware’s Elden Ring) and anime (via Sony’s Crunchyroll and Aniplex)—the study reveals how shared creative assets and cross-platform synergy became the foundation for this alliance.
The case challenges learners to consider the trade-offs between acquisition and alliance, the strategic value of IP ownership, and the implications of such partnerships in a competitive global market. It also examines how Sony’s evolving identity as a content-driven tech conglomerate aligns with Kadokawa’s manga ecosystem model to fuel future growth.
Ultimately, this case invites discussion on whether the alliance represents a calculated compromise or a visionary model for co-creation in the age of media convergence.
