Abstract
Thai Smart Card was one of the first companies in Thailand to introduce digital payment solutions, aiming to make cashless transactions easier and more accessible. Using smart card technology, the company sought to transform how consumers and businesses handled payments in Thailand’s cash-payment society at the time. However, despite its first-mover advantage, Thai Smart Card struggled to build consumer awareness and stimulate their demand for cashless payments.
This case study explores the company’s business model, and its efforts to lead the market through innovation while discussing the insufficient revenue generation due to the failure to become the first mover. The case encourages learners to analyze whether being a pioneer in the digital payment market is always an advantage as well as to adapt the decision-making process in the Thai Smart Card’s critical business situation.
