Abstract
UNIQLO's transformation from a small Japanese retailer to a global fashion leader highlights its innovative supply chain management. This case study examines how the company adopted relational flexibility — a hybrid strategy combining relational governance and partnering flexibility. By forming strategic partnerships with Chinese suppliers and introducing the "Takumi" team, UNIQLO enhanced supplier competence, ensured consistent quality, and fostered long-term collaboration — resulting in a robust supply chain that reduced costs and efficiently met real-time market demands.
Despite its successes, the company faced labor-related controversies, prompting efforts to improve transparency and align with sustainability goals. This case study provides insights into UNIQLO’s strategic supply chain innovations, offering a framework for navigating the complexities of global market demands while encouraging learners to discuss sustainability and ethical concerns.
