Abstract

Tired City transformed Vietnam’s creative retail landscape by building a platform that connects independent local artists with consumers through culturally inspired lifestyle products. The company combines artistic collaboration and cultural storytelling to create commercial opportunities for Vietnamese creators while preserving authentic local identity.

This case study examines how Tired City has leveraged technology to scale its artist ecosystem, expand its e-commerce presence, and strengthen its competitive position, while confronting a new strategic challenge posed by the rapid emergence of generative artificial intelligence (AI).

The case explores Tired City’s business model, which enables artists to retain ownership of their work while licensing designs for commercial products, supported by a growing creative community and digital engagement initiatives. And, as AI-powered tools become increasingly capable of generating creative content, the case evaluates the opportunities to improve efficiency, accelerate product development, and personalize customer experiences, alongside concerns surrounding originality, copyright, brand authenticity, and the future role of human creativity.

Designed as a problem-solving case study, it invites learners to analyze how Tired City can balance innovation with its long-standing commitment to artistic originality and cultural heritage. Students are challenged to evaluate strategic alternatives for AI adoption, assess their implications for competitive advantage and stakeholder relationships, and recommend an AI strategy that supports long-term growth while preserving the company’s distinctive identity as a champion of Vietnam’s creative community.
