Abstract
ACEN, one of the fastest-growing renewable energy companies in the Asia-Pacific region, has positioned itself at the forefront of the Philippines’ energy transition. Operating within a power sector historically dominated by coal, the company has pursued an ambitious strategy to accelerate renewable energy deployment while addressing challenges related to grid reliability, financing, and long-term decarbonization.
This case study examines ACEN’s Energy Transition Mechanism (ETM), an innovative market-based financing model designed to accelerate the retirement of coal-fired power plants and redirect capital toward renewable energy investments. By analyzing ACEN’s pioneering transaction involving the South Luzon Thermal Energy Corporation (SLTEC) coal facility, the case explores how the company balanced sustainability, profitability, energy security, and stakeholder interests.
The case study highlights how ACEN transformed stranded fossil-fuel assets into a catalyst for renewable growth while creating a replicable blueprint for clean energy finance and decarbonization across Asia.
