Abstract
Vietnam Airlines: Between National Mission and Global Competition explores the strategic evolution of Vietnam’s flag carrier as it seeks to balance its role as a national champion with the demands of competing in the global aviation industry. From its origins as a state-run airline to its emergence as a modern international carrier, Vietnam Airlines has expanded its network across Asia, Europe, Oceania, and North America while remaining closely tied to Vietnam’s economic development, tourism ambitions, and international connectivity goals.
The case examines how Vietnam Airlines has leveraged Vietnamese cultural identity, diaspora connections, government support, and global partnerships to build its international presence. It highlights the airline’s post-pandemic recovery, ambitious fleet modernization plans, investments in service quality and digital transformation, and efforts to achieve international five-star standards. At the same time, the airline faces intensifying competition from global full-service carriers, low-cost airlines, and emerging regional rivals.
Through the lens of internationalization strategy, national branding, and state-owned enterprise management, the case challenges students to assess whether Vietnam Airlines’ status as a state-controlled flag carrier represents a sustainable competitive advantage or a strategic constraint. As the airline enters its next phase of growth, management must determine how to balance commercial performance, global competitiveness, and national responsibilities in an increasingly complex and competitive aviation landscape.
