Abstract

UNIQLO's transformation from a small Japanese retailer to a global fashion leader highlights its innovative supply chain management. This case study examines how the company adopted relational flexibility, a hybrid strategy combining relational governance and partnering flexibility, to build a resilient and globally competitive supply chain. By forming strategic partnerships with Chinese suppliers and introducing the "Takumi" team, UNIQLO enhanced supplier capabilities, ensured consistent product quality, and fostered long-term collaboration, resulting in cost efficiencies and the ability to respond rapidly to changing consumer demand.

Despite its successes, the company faced labor-related controversies, prompting efforts to improve supply chain transparency, sustainability performance, and ethical sourcing practices. This case study provides insights into UNIQLO’s supply chain innovation, supplier relationship management, and digital supply chain transformation while offering a framework for addressing sustainability and ethical challenges in global apparel supply chains.
