Abstract

Born from the "Polca" fandom as a whimsical whale-polar bear hybrid, Polcasan has evolved from a tribute to superstars Tay Tawan and New Thitipoom into a sophisticated commercial powerhouse. Transcending its origins as simple merchandise, the character now operates as a standalone recording artist and high-fashion collaborator, pioneering the "Character Economy" by commanding the stage with the same charisma as human idols. This shift illustrates how Thai entertainment now leverages digital IP to achieve independent stardom rooted in deep fan loyalty.

This case study analyzes Polcasan’s transformation into an autonomous commercial asset, exploring how IP innovation allows entertainment companies to diversify revenue beyond human talent. By tracing its progression from star-linked merchandise to a self-sustaining entity, the study highlights how mascots offer scalable engagement and operational flexibility. Ultimately, the analysis addresses the strategic potential of character-based IP while weighing the challenges of market saturation and the ongoing brand dependency on human counterparts.
